An Angel and a Demon
I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of a love story between an angel and a demon. It’s like a star-crossed romance times a thousand. I mean, what in Heaven or Hell would possess an angel and a demon to even associate with one another, let alone fall in love? As Meg (a demon) once said to Castiel (an angel) on Supernatural:
I miss the simplicity. I was bad. You were good. Life was easier. Now it's all so messy. I'm kind of good, which sucks. And you're kind of bad -- which is actually all manner of hot.
Because I really wanted to explore this idea further in my own art, I decided to add a prompt for it in my Psychoprompts list for Inktober. I wasn’t aware how soon this prompt was going to come along, however, until I looked at my list on the 10th (as we were on our way to the local Pumpkin Festival) and realized I wasn’t going to be able to give this prompt as much attention as I’d like to on its designated day. Still, I managed to sketch out two characters, both faceless, and brainstorm a bit with their two very different lifestyles. I’m sure they will change/evolve over time, but I do like the clean/smooth lines of the angel vs the sketchy/messy lines of the demon. I also like how the angel’s rounded features contrast the demon’s sharp edges.
So far I have a sketch of the angel giving the demon a small cloud as a gift, and the demon giving the angel a skull as a gift. Sort of a “you make me a better person, and you make me more grounded” deal.
This next idea of the two of them reaching toward one another from their opposing worlds might one day spark bittersweet feelings of love and longing. But for now, this sketch feels a bit “naïve” for such a complex variety of emotions. I will have to go back to the drawing board for this one, maybe alter the way their characters look, and change the colors from these warm yellows and reds to more blues and maybe even black.
I haven’t given them names yet. Right now they are just Angel and Demon. I think in order to do these two justice I will have to eventually name them and give them some backstory. How did they meet? What made them go back to one another after the initial meet cute? Was it like Meg and Castiel, who met on opposite sides of the same war? Did it start out bloody and violent before it softened into something else? Or was it like Crowley and Aziraphale from Good Omens? Two angelic friends who just, sort of, stayed friends even after one of them fell?
Wherever I wind up with these two, I hope to eventually turn their story into a series of small comics. Maybe even a graphic novel one day if I’m ambitious enough.
Until next time, may your demons be on their best behavior and your angels be ornery as ever.
